Pondicherry was once the capital of the more modest of colonial empires, French India, who left in 1954, leaving behind their rich architectural, cultural and linguistic imprints. But the history of Pondicherry begins much before that. It can be traced back to the 1st century and finds mention in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea. It has been the base for numerous civilizations, mostly because of its maritime trade potential.

Through the centuries (4th to 13th) it has been a part of the Pallava Kingdom, Chola Kingdom and the Pandya Kingdom. After a brief rule by the Muslim rulers, who established the Sultanate of Madurai, Pondicherry became a part of the Vijaynagar Empire, which took over almost all of South India that lasted till 1638. Following a brief stint by Sultan of Bijapur, the French East India Company set up their trading center in Pondicherry in 1674, thus beginning the era of colonial settlement here. A number of conflicts raged between the French, Dutch and British and Pondicherry changed hands quite a lot, being returned back to the French every time. Finally, it was in 1954 that the bureaucracy of Pondicherry united with India and it was declared a Union Territory in 1963.

Pondicherry, or as it is known now, Puducherry has a subtle beauty to it and with such a tumultuous past, it has now come to be the kind of place that lets you define its color and pace depending on what you are seeking, whether serenity, vibrancy or romance.
