What is the local cuisine of Kumarakom?

A foodie would describe Kumarakom as, “Kappa and meen curry (tapioca and spicy fish curry), kozhi and appams (chicken curry and appams), mutton stew, parota, karimeen polichada (pearl spot fish steamed and wrapped in banana leaf), prawn curry, lobsters and a variety of lip smacking payasams(desserts).”

Apart from these, you get to indulge in Malabar cuisine which is a set of unique recipes from Northern Kerala. There is pidi and kozhi (rice balls with chicken curry) and beef specialities that you’ll find nowhere else. There is a range of appams for you to try -kalappam, idiappam, palappam, vattayappam etc. which are either combined with stew or eaten with sugar for those who are not a fan of spicy food. Coconut, sometimes grated, in the form of oil and milk usually form the basis of each dish. The rice is red stained and thicker than basmati. It is very heavy and filling. Then there is the regular sambar, idli, vada and dosas that you’ll find all over Kerala.

Kumarakom’s close proximity with the sea and backwaters is the reason why the seafood here is so popular. It’s fresh and at reasonable rates. Also, take a swig of toddy (fermented coconut water that is alcoholic), eat fresh fish and live life like a mallu does!
