One trip to the City of Joy and you are going to grab all the best things to buy from Kolkata. This way, you get to keep Kolkata with you, alive in your home, memory and hearts. Some of the goodies you can pick up on this bhaalo holiday are:

Terracotta Products

Known far and wide for its terracotta products, Kolkata is especially famous for the 'Bankura horses and elephants' which come from Bankura. Terracotta is one of the first attempts of man at clay modelling and has been perfected with time to produce these beauteous caricatures.

You can find these horses in two colours, with a tint of red or in a shade of black, depending on how they have been smoked in fire. The Bankura Horse is a symbol of Bengal today and adorns the homes of thousands of people worldwide. Some other terracotta handicrafts are terracotta shells, vases, bowls and pots. Terracotta products are definitely one of the best things to buy in Kolkata.

Best place to pick up Terracotta products in Kolkata are Chowringhee Lane, Dakshinapan Shopping Complex and Swabhumi Heritage Park. If you want to see the making of a Bankura Horse first hand, head to Biboda, Jaikrishnapur, Kamardiha, Nakaijuri, Bishnupur or Keyaboti.

Sarees

A typical look for Bengali women is being adorned in white saris with red borders, commonly called the Lal Paar Sari. These saris usually worn during traditional and/or religious events. Apart from these, Kolkata is also famous for its silk fabric, namely the Tussar and Vishnupuri Silk. These fabrics have a subtle sheen and smooth feel and are beautiful to drape. Another must buy from Kolkata is the Tant Cotton Saree or Bangladesh’s famous Dhakai sari.

Since these items are popular buys amongst tourists, shopkeepers may quote exorbitant prices to you. Make it a rule to bargain before you pick up a piece, to make sure you get value for your money.

Prominent places to pick up sari in Kolkata are New Market and Dakshinapan Shopping Complex. In addition, two very famous places to do so are the Adi Dhakeswari Bastralaya located in Gariahat and Adi Mohini Mohan Kanjilal located on Mahatma Gandhi Road both laden with the most spectacular authentic bengali sarees and so much more.

Sweets

Kolkata and its sweets are inseparable! Apart from the rasgullas, you could also take back kora pak sandesh, chumchum, and chhanar jilepi. During winters, you will come across many delicacies made with khejurer gur (date jaggery).

Popular shops to buy sweets from are Girish Chandra Dey (Maniktala) Balaram Mullick Sweet Shop (Bhawanipur), Sharma Snacks (Bhawanipur) and Chittaranjan Mishthan Bhandar (Hathkola).

Buy the sweets just before you leave the city so that they reach home in the freshest state!

Jute Craft Items

From jute handbags and wall hangings to jute jewelery and footwear--you will come across a diverse array of jute merchandise. Being a state that is famous for its jute produce, West Bengal offers the finest of options in this sector. You can buy jute and other handicrafts of West Bengal at Dakshinapan Shopping Complex, Ankur Kala Kendra (Park Street), Swabhumi Heritage Park and Central Cottage Industries Emporium.

While you are shopping in Kolkata, it is recommendable to buy a big jute shopping bag for all your purchases. Not only will it help to promote this traditional hand-loom sector, it is also environmentally safe. So go green, say yes to jute!

You will also find shimmery colourful bangles, intriguing cane curios and metal craft items of all shapes and sizes which are some of the best things to buy from Kolkata.
