Chandigarh’s museums and art galleries often tend to get obscured by the glamour of the city’s shopping and sightseeing scene. While the museums have much to offer in terms of both artistic and scientific history, the art galleries provide a lively platform for artists, both local and from across the country:

The Museum here is multidimensional in that right from the times of dinosaurs to the time Chandigarh came into being- you can see it all here at the museum. Designed, yes you got it right, by Le Corbusier, the Museum, in their Architecture Museum section, houses the original blueprints of the city’s planning and evolution by Le Corbusier and others that were involved. You can also buy the detailed handbook sold at the reception. You can trace the development of the city, plan by plan if you are an architecture connoisseur.

Begin your exploration with Natural history museum where real size dinosaurs lurk from behind shrubs and prepare to be amazed by the findings on display including fossils and dino remains. Now wander off to the Gandhara sculpture section, where the 627 sculptures, dating to early 2nd century, on display are the ones that India received from Lahore museum at the time of partition.

Move over to the Manuscript section and here you can read manuscripts of different religions from the 16th and 18th century, including Sikh manuscripts recovered at the time of partition. If you are one for appreciating ancient Indian art, then Indian Miniature Painting section will be quite to your liking with its collection of miniature paintings from the Pahari School of Art, Rajasthani and Sikh art. Finally, your exploration culminates with the contemporary Indian Art section where works of some of the pioneers of modern Indian art can be seen like M.F. Hussain, Amrita Shergill, Tyeb Mehta to name a few. By the end of it, you would have travelled millenias.

Here you can get a glimpse of the contemporary art styles and forms of artists from different parts of the world. Frequently cultural events are held out here, including dance and theatrical performances. If you are fortunate, you can catch some truly incredible photo exhibitions.

No matter what’s on your schedule, this multidisciplinary gallery and exhibition space is worth checking out. Housing one of the best combinations of contemporary and traditional art, the gallery often has on display works by both more well established as well as upcoming artists. Whether its Oils, watercolours, sculptures, graphics, photography, ceramics or installation art-you can see it all here.

Chandigarh is a banquet for all the senses and palates. Coupled with its architecture and design, its vibrant cultural scene provides the city with an effervescent edge that is sure to bewitch you.
