The largest city in the North East as well as its gateway, Guwahati is the cultural centre point of Assam. Also, with the capital of the state Dispur sheltered in the heart of the city, Guwahati automatically happens to cater to all the cultural exhibitions and displays of the state and the region. Art and cultural buffs are surely going to be fascinated by the vivid display of the rich heritage of the state in one place. Even if the vast history and culture of Assam can barely be bound by walls, these places make an honest attempt of doing so, and have done justise with it. Lets look at the most popular art and cultural centres of Guwahati:

  • Assam State Museum 

    Assam State Museum is located near the
    Dighalipukhuri water tank in Guwahati. This gorgeous museum dedicated to the culture and heritage of Assam offers a vivid and astonishing display of the centuries old traditions of the state. The anthology of antiques displayed in the museum dates back to the pre-historic era. The collection boasts of some of the most authentic prehistoric ivory paintings, sculptures, metal, woodwork and costumes etc.
    Constructed in 1940, the museum has ever since made a constant effort to incorporate the ever changing culture and lifestyle of the Assamese community. Starting from the local musical instruments used by the tribes to the apparels of the people are exhibited gorgeously in here. There are also replicas of the tribal huts where you can walk in and examine the titbits of the place.
    There is also a Library in the museum that stocks books, journals and periodicals on art, culture, mythology, biography, encyclopaedic works and even the
    Asiatic Society (Kolkata based) journals of India.

    Timings: Open from 10am to 5pm in summers and upto to 4.30 pm in winters. Closed on Mondays, 2nd & 4th Saturdays. The museum permits photography only after obtaining permissions.

  • Srimanta Shankardev Kalakshetra

    Srimanta Shankardev Kalakshetra is a premier institution exhibiting the culture and heritage of Assam.
