Festivals are an integral part of any place and Gangtok being the capital city of Sikkim has kept the culture and tradition intact. The vibrancy of these festivals are so beautiful that it will leave a lifetime impression on your mind. The following festivals are few of the best in the city:

  • Saga Dawa

    A much revered and auspicious festival in the Buddhist community, Saga Dawa is celebrated passionately in Gangtok. It is mostly followed in Tibet and Nepal and Gangtok being inhabited by these communities, the festival is celebrated with much reverence in the city.
    Saga Dawa means the ‘fourth month' and on the 15th day of this month according to the Tibetan calendar the festival is celebrated. The festival is celebrated to pay homage to the birth, death and the attainment of Nirvana of Gautama Buddha. People gathers into the monasteries to worship Him and this is followed by singing prayers and devotional dances.
    In Gangtok the festival is celebrated during summers by the end of May and early June.

  • Phang Lhabsol

    On the 15 day of August, Phang Lhabsol is celebrated in Sikkim to worship the mighty Kanchenjunga ranges. It is organised and famed by the third Chogyal of Sikkim, Chakdor Namgyal. It is the time of the year when the locals of Sikkim pay homage to Mother Nature. Another significance of the festival is that on this day the blood brothers Lepchas and the Bhutias signed a peace treaty.
    On this day, the tutelary deities of Sikkim are summoned to receive the respect of the people. Lamas dance portraying the red-faced deities wearing a crown made of five skulls on their heads. To add to the charm of the occasion, jesters known as 'Atchars' play antics.

  • Dashain

    Originally a Nepali festival, Dashain is celebrated in Gangtok with much reverence among the Nepali community of the city. In the month of September and October, the festival is hosted in this beautiful hill station.
    It is the celebration of good winning over evil, with the triumphant of Goddess Durga victory over Mahishasura. Thus the puja of Goddess Durga is offered with much reverence. It is celebrated enthusiastically by Hindus and the Nepalis of Gangtok.

  • Gangtok Festival

    In the month of December, the Gangtok festival is celebrated in Sikkim. The main focus of the festival is tourism development and it is organised by the Tourism Development Department of Sikkim. It is a food and cultural festival, that displays the rich cultural heritage of the state and different variety of food found in Sikkim. It is followed by traditional dancing and singing performances of the local people, presented for the tourists. Food stalls are decorated in traditional style, that makes the surrounding vibrant and colorful.
