Pieces from history find its right, respected place in museums and through time becomes a concrete teller of tales. A visit to the a historical city can never be complete without taking a walk back to the past. Hyderabad has a variety of museums, some of which are listed below.

  • Salar Jung Museum

There must be some reason why this museum is one of the three national museums of the country. Personal collections of Salar Jung III, which is famous as the biggest private  collection, are given their rightful place of respect in this museum. So, from Jade daggers, which belonged to Emperor Jehangir, Noorjahan and Shah Jehan to wardrobe of Tipu Sultan, among others are on display. If these are not enough, be ready to be mesmerised by the statue of Veiled Rebecca by G.B. Benzoni or listen to the ticking of clocks in unison in the clock room. And, again, if these are still not enough, there are more things to captivate you more-  Qurans. Not captivated? Well, one is in gold and another in silver. Gaping in wonder? Close it, these are only two of the many varieties.

Timings: 10:00 to 17:00 except Fridays
  • B.M. Birla Planetarium and Science & Technological Museum

This museum is a time / space machine- step inside it and travel back to the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth in the Dinosaurium or enhance your astronomical knowledge as you learn more about the Black Hole or Halley’s comet. Believed to be a world class planetarium, it is a depiction of India’s advancement in the field of science. Coming back to history again, the archaeological gallery will take you to a tour of ancient India’s diverse legacies, from sculpture of Buddha to palm leaf manuscripts. The Modern Art  Gallery brings chapter X of the Hindu text, Bhagavad Gita to life with its terracotta murals. The knowledge system that this place stores is directly proportional to your urge to absorb. So, grasp as much as you can, after all, what can be a better souvenir than a part of history itself in the treasure chest of your brain?
  • AP State Archaeology Museum

A man’s desire, if sincere and true, can really take the shape of a mountain and when the then Nizam wished to preserve the rich heritage of Hyderabad, it materialised in the form of the AP State Archaeology Museum. A copy of the Quran with the seal of Emperor Shah Jahan, Buddhist artifacts dating as far back as the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC and Hindu sculptures of the Chalukyan period and Vijayanagara period- all these and much more are on display in this museum. More surprises are in store as you go further to discover an Egyptian mummy, the daughter of the sixth pharaoh of Egypt, inside a casket and reproductions of the famous Ajanta paintings. Amazing, isn’t it? And finally, when you come out of the museum, you will be  greeted with the greenery of the fresh Public Garden.
