Former settling grounds of the French, Pondicherry is today invaded by thousands of visitors. Whether you are seeking an escape from your vacation getaway or simply want to connect with the city, you could indulge in the following activities:

  • River cruises

If you have ever entertained the dream of just setting sail in a floating house, living off comfortably and exploring uncharted wilderness on our way, then head over to Pondicherry to do just that. With dense, evergreen mangrove forests lining the banks of the waterway, it can be either be your romantic getaway or a lifetime's adventure or both; either way it is one of the best ways for you to experience Pondicherry in depth, literally. You could take the Ariyankuppam river cruise that will take you down the history lane or waterway of Pondicherry through Arikamedu, the ancient Roman trade center. You can see the remnants of its Roman, ancient Indian and French legacy in the architecture and monuments of the port town. Alternatively, you could take the Yanam river cruise along Goringa Godavari river. As you reach the Godavari bank, there is a massive sculpture of 2 elephants showering the Shiva idol with water to greet you.

Preferably, take the late afternoon cruise when the weather is comfortable and there is a gentle breeze blowing. Importantly, you can enjoy the river tinged with the gentle gold of the setting sun along with the passing countryside panoramas.

  • Pottery

Home to potter Ray Meeker, Pondicherry is the ideal place to experience the ancient art of clay and pottery making. We have all known the thrill of creating and playing with those clay figures as kids. Out here you can get a little more creative and move and mold this wonderful material into pots, vases, bowls, etc. It's not at all as easy as it sounds, but who knows what may start out as an experiment may just become a lifelong passion for you. Visit the Golden Bridge Pottery center, run by Ray Meeker and Deborah Smith, for inspiration and a rare glimpse into the life of a studio and a village potter.

Indulge in these offbeat activities and it will not only give your vacation a completely different tangent, but also open up a completely different aspect of Pondicherry's cultural tapestry to you.
