Tourist places near Chikmagalur

  • Kemmanagundi

The ‘place with red soil’, that is what Kemmanagundi means in Kannada. The drive to Kemmanagundi from Chikmagalur takes 2.5 to 3 hours even if it’s only at a distance of 57 km due to uneven road. However, it is a awesome ride with the magnificent mountain range stretching 70 kilometres by the road. Also, when the road heads down to Kallathigiri you can witness spectacular scenery.
The Kemmanagundi range was once upon a time the summer retreat of
HRS Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV the Maharaja of Mysore. The Royal Horticultural Society of Karnataka has its foundation at Kemmanagundi. The beautiully laid out gardens are well complimented by the surrounding lush green environs.
Situated at a height of 1434 meters, Kemmanagundi is an amazing place to visit in any season, as it experiences excellent weather throughout the year. However, during monsoons driving on the slopes may be little difficult. So, you will have to make sure of your driving skills unless you have an option of getting someone to do that for you.

  • Sringeri

Sringeri is a holy town located 90 km west of Chikmagalur town. It is situated on the  revered banks of Tunga, a Vedic Peetha established by Sri Adi Shankara, the famous exponent of the Advaita philosophy in 9th Century A.D. It is famous for the Vidyashankara Temple that was originally constructed by the Hoysalas and later completed by the founders of the Vijayanagara Empire. Sharada temple was an early 20th century addition to the place. In the Vidyashankara shrine, there are 12 zodiac pillars, which are so constructed that the rays of the sun fall on the pillar corresponding to the month.

The beauty of Chikmagalur is better experienced than discussed. So, why don't you pack up your bags and head to the coffee country away from the hustle and bustle of life.
