Water, whether still or in motion, has such an attraction for the lover of nature, that the most beautiful landscape seems scarcely complete without it. There are no effects fascinating as those produced by the reflections in nature's living mirror, with their delicacy of form, ever fleeting and changing and their subtle combinations of colors. Shillong has plenty of natural waterfalls where you can take a dip and relax and rejuvenate. Here are some of them:

  • Elephant Falls

Elephant fall was initially referred to as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew
by the local Khasi People, which roughly translates into three steps waterfall. This was renamed as Elephant Fall by the Britishers who found it difficult to pronounce the local name. The waterfall got its nomenclature because there used to be a huge rock in the shape of an Elephant near the fall, however, the rock was destroyed in the 1897 earthquake. This two tier waterfall is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Shillong. The urge to shed your inhibitions and take a dip in cold, clear water is irresistible. Located at a distance of 10 kms from the main city, it has tourists and locals flocking in at all times of the year, especially in monsoons.

  • Spread Eagle Fall

As you trek 3 kms towards the forests from the polo ground, the silence of the forest and the chirping of the birds is broken by a hush of water cascading through rocks. As you inch closer and closer, the hush grows into a roaring waterfall, cutting through rocky terrains, making a niche for itself. Spread Eagle Fall or Sati Fall is the widest waterfall in the whole of Shillong. The beauty of the place is a sight to behold. Surrounded by forests, the cacophony of the waterfalls is the best place to unwind and de stress.

  • Bishop and Beadon Falls

Located in the outskirts of Shillong, Bishop Fall is the 22nd highest waterfalls in India. With a height of 135 meters, Bishop fall is a three tiered waterfall with a twin called Beadon fall. The sight of both the waterfall cascading through steep rocky mountains is a sight to behold. The clear water and the picturesque landscape makes it a perfect picnic spot for both tourists and locals alike. There is also a small hydroelectric Powerhouse located at the base of the dam.

Unlike waterfalls in other parts of the country, waterfalls in shillong rarely dry up and always are in their full glory. Keep your camera handy to capture some beautiful moments. The cool water is a natural stress buster. Take a bath, play water volleyball or just dip your feet and relax, be sure to have a great time!
