But, if on this holiday, you are looking for something different, you could take a look at the some offbeat destinations around Mumbai. Lesser known and quiet, these places offers a close tryst with nature away from touristy crowds and the city hullabaloo.

Dapoli-Harnai-Anjarle

The reason we are clumping the three together is because they are set closed together and you can easily cover them together. Let’s begin with Dapoli which is a little more than 200 km from Mumbai. Blessed with plenteous natural beauty and a cool climate, Dapoli also boasts of a long coastline surrounded by forests and hills. Full of jackfruit, cashew nut, coconut and betelnut trees, and home to a number of migratory birds, it is almost like a ‘Mahabaleshwar of Konkan’.

About 15 km from Dapoli, Harnai is a nice secluded beach destination (three words that are rarely heard together in India). It has a fort at one end and natural harbour with an abundant supply of seafood. Add to that beautiful seascape, rocky cliffs and a very interesting fishing village, and you have a promising destination in your hands.

Located just 20 km away from Dapoli, Anjarle is known for the famous “Kadyawarcha Ganpati” temple, which was originally constructed around the 12th century. The rare right-sided (trunk curved to the right) Ganesh idol is considered to be a live deity (Jagrut daivat). From the top of the temple, one can get amazing views of the Suvarnadurg fort, betel, palm and coconut plantations, the blue expanse of the sea and white sandy beaches down below.

Harihareshwar-Shrivardhan-Diveagar

Once again you can cover these three together. Beside being a popular beach resort, Harihareshwar is also considered as an important pilgrimage spot. Surrounded by four hills named after four different deities, with a renowned temple dedicated to Lord Harihareshwar, this place is sure to bring you peace and serenity.

Both Shrivardhan and Diveagar are two more beach destinations around Harihareshwar. The history of Shrivardhan goes back a long way. It is believed to be one of the spots Arjun visited during his pilgrimage. Diveagar is another upcoming beach destination containing a small fishing village and a number of cottages, homestays, local eateries etc. You must try the local flavours of this place. Visit our Harihareshwar Travel Guide to know more about this wonderful destination.

Murud

Located at a distance of 150 km from Mumbai, Murud can be counted as one of the best offbeat destinations around Mumbai. Famous for its fort (Murud -Janjira), which sits on an oval rock with 19 still intact bastions and is considered to be one of the strongest marine forts in the country. The Murud beach is very clean and safe for swimming. Olive ridley turtles are commonly sighted in the crystal waters. It also has a number of beachfront hotels and resorts available if you wish to stay overnight. There are number of temples and other forts in the area as well. Check out the best time to visit, places to see and more at our Murud Travel Guide page.
