Nashik’s soil and weather are ideal for grape growing and there are over 30 wineries around the city. Thanks to the educational efforts of the grape-growers and wine associations in Nashik, wine drinking is a bit of a family activity here. You have places like Sommelier, a ‘family wine restaurant’ with a family section on an upper floor, or Cellar Door, a terrace bar serving a wide range of wines.

Sula Wine Tasting room

Sula Vineyards on Gangapur Road is a must-do. Their Californian-style Sula Wine Bar overlooks the vineyards and the Gangapur Dam. It is not very far from Mumbai and to reach here, it takes about three hours by a Mumbai to Nashik taxi. Its spectacular view, international look, good music and tasteful décor are appealing. In the tasting room, try the fruity Sula wines with cheese, crackers and olives. Try their restaurant Little Italy. About 3 km from here is Sula’s Beyond (Tel: 0253- 2230141-42; Tariff: Rs 6,000-12,500), a beautiful resort, overlooking vineyards and lake. Website sulawines.com

ND Wines is located in Nashik’s famous wine region of Niphad and Dindori (from which it derives its initials), and was established by a group of local grape farmers. It’s a 400-acre wineproducing vineyard. Website ndwines.com

Chateau Indage, not near Nashik but in Narayangaon, near Pune, is worth a visit. Try Ivy, their ‘rural’ wine bar. Plenty of Rosé wine, a wine-tasting session with the resident winemaker, and a day full of Ivy Brut, Chantilli Chardonnay and Shiraz, and Indage Reserve Cabernet.... Website chateauindage.com
