about dera baba banda

A very old Gurdwara (more than 300 years old) located in the Reasi district of Katra, Dera Baba Banda is dedicated to Baba Banda Bahadur, who was an appointed leader by the Sikh guru - Guru Gobind Singh, and also one of his favourites. Banda was a sikh military commander and led many movements against persecution and bigotry of the rulers at the time. Apart from Banda Bahadur's ashes, the Gurdwara also showcases some weapons like a sword, and an arrow, that were gifted to him by Guru Gobind Singh. There are also a number of wall paintings on the Gurdwara walls, along with a "Nishan Sahib" (the Sikh holy flag) made up of Deodar wood, erected by Baba himself. Being one of the important religious centres in Kashmir, the Gurdwara attracts a huge number of Hindus and Sikhs, especially during the three-day Vaisakhi mela. The dera is managed by Mahant. S. Jatinder Pal Singh.
