Which are the most famous ghats in Varanasi and what is the best time to visit there?

3 people found this answer useful Useful ?Yes

Dashashwamedh Ghat is undoubtedly the most famous ghat of Varanasi. and it is most spectacular at the time of this daily event Ganga Aarti..Also, Varanasi is world famous for its morning " Subah-e-Banaras", so the best time to visit these ghats are at the time of sunrise. Start a morning stroll from Assi Ghat at the one end and proceed upto Raj Ghat at the other end for approximately 5 kms, and you will experience a multicolor of life, cultures, traditions and rituals on the bank of The Ganges at in Varanasi.

The most famous ghat is undoubtedly the Dashashwamedh Ghat. Every evening at 6 pm, there is a spectacular aarti that takes place. Amidst holy music, traditional ritual and calm Ganges breeze, the atmosphere is charged with a surreal energy and is meditative in some sense. There are several vantage points to observe the entire ceremony - you can either witness the procedure from the numerous boats surrounding the scintillating ghat like insects, or else from nearby temples on the ghat itself which offers a top-down panoramic view of the ceremony.

Besides the Dashashwamedh ghat, I suggest a walk through the entire ghats in the evening - from Harishchandra ghat to Manikarnika ghat -  and witness the walk of life - where there are ghats of funeral pyre to the ghats where newly born kids get their hair tonsured (mundan).
