Indian Railways, (official website: www.indianrail.gov.in Internet Booking site: www.irctc.co.in) administered by the Ministry of Railways of the Government of India, is the state-owned railway company of India that owns and operates most of the country's rail transport and infrastructure. Indian Railways has one of the largest and the busiest rail networks in the world with transportation of over 17 million passengers and more than 2 million tonnes of freight daily. Indian Railways run 10,000 trains everyday. It is the world's largest utility or commercial employer with more than 1.4 million employees. The Indian Railways has a train network that is spread across the limits of the country in every direction, covering 6,909 stations over a total route length of more than 63,327 kilometres. Indian Railways owns over 200,000 wagons, 50,000 coaches and 8,000 locomotives of rolling stock. As of 31 March 2011, 21,014 km of the total 64,215 km route length is electrified. A standard passenger train consists of eighteen coaches, but popular trains can have up to 26 coaches. Reservation against cancellation service is a provision for shared berth in case the travel ticket is not confirmed. All current passenger service is provided using electric or diesel locomotives, except for the rack section of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) which still relies on Swiss-built X class steamers to do the job.
